Opens Dialogue for CBD in Food Products
Japans New Strides in Cannabis Policy
On May 30, Japan took a significant leap toward reforming its cannabis laws, signaling a potential shift in the use of CBD within food products. This move by the Japanese government opens a period for public commentary on the bill proposing these changes.
The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) suggested modifications earlier in February to adjust the permissible THC levels in products, aiming to secure health and hygiene standards by setting a maximum residue limit for THC in cannabis grass-derived products.
A Milestone for the CBD Market
Yves Antoniazzi of AstraSana Holding AG sees Japan’s steps as monumental for the CBD industry, marking the nation as a forerunner in incorporating CBD into food products. This approval could potentially revolutionize the market, allowing corporate entities to introduce CBD products in retail sectors.
Cannabis Legislation: A Transformative Journey
Discussions on medical cannabis began in May 2022, culminating in legislative amendments to the Cannabis Control Law by October and December 2023. These reforms included legalizing cannabis-based pharmaceuticals and redefining cannabis under Japan’s Narcotic Control Law, alongside stringent measures against unauthorized use.
Market Expansion and Legal Implications
Euromonitor anticipates a significant expansion in Japan’s cannabis market, attributing the growth to an increased demand for products that aid in relaxation, sleep, and stress relief. Following the 2023 amendments, the CBD market in Japan is expected to venture into various sectors, potentially changing the narrative around cannabis use.
Despite the positive market outlook, a rise in cannabis-related criminal cases, particularly among the youth, underscores the challenges of misinformation and illegal consumption. Collaboration with Capcom by the Osaka Prefectural Police seeks to address these issues through public awareness campaigns.
